Podcast EP1- HOLY! I spend 5,000 hr on Netflix

Netflix is a well-known subscription-video on demand service that has gained 247 million paid users as of 2023. The company started out as a DVD mailing service, but as the internet grew, it decided to shift their focus to an online based service in 2007; initially, the platform only had around 1000 films to choose from, a stark contrast to the 17,000+ titles it boasts nowadays. Their subscriber count grew from 21 million users in 2011 to over 247 million users in 2023, increasing more than ten-fold in the last decade. For the company Blockbuster, who had the opportunity to purchase Netflix back in 2000 during the dot com bubble, this is likely a very regretted missed opportunity. Netflix now takes up almost 8 percent of US screen time, just behind the popular online video Youtube at 9 percent, and accounts for 8 percent of screen time globally.

Although many people find SVOD services to be very convenient, they have caused a habit to develop among many viewers, namely the problem of binge watching. The average Netflix user spends up to 3.2 hours a day watching Netflix, and for binge watchers, this number can easily go beyond that. Binge-watching hours of content at a time can be pretty fun, but there are people who feel that this kind of behavior can be very unhealthy, especially when people start sacrificing their sleep to binge on shows. It’s even possible that this kind of consumer behavior encourages filmmakers to start chasing quantity over quality to meet the viewing demands of consumers.
