Podcast EP6 - Wait! Let me take a selfie of this view

It is fairly common nowadays when passing by tourist destinations to see throngs of people holding cameras and phones up to capture records of themselves in the moment. Social media platforms are laden with the amateur photography of these travelers, and the situation has developed to the point where there is even a term for travel with documentation in mind: selfie tourism. More often than not, there will be more people invested in taking pictures at scenic locations than people just trying to enjoy the view, and this is further exacerbated by social media’s glamorous allure and aesthetic driven algorithm, which incentivizes users to create more than perfect images of themselves.

This usually means that people caught up in the glamor of social media exposure often spend lengthy amounts of time positioning and preparing for the perfect picture, meaning that in tourist spots they frequently spend more time taking pictures than looking at what they are photographing. This raises an interesting question for researchers, who are beginning to visualize the human experience as two parts, the Remembering Self and the Experiencing Self. As its name suggests, the Remembering Self is responsible for memories of experiences instead of immediate responses to new ones, and it seems that the younger generation of social media users are more attuned with the Remembering Self.

Yet such behavior has led to criticism of tourist attractions being much less fun than in the past, sometimes even becoming dangerous as photographers struggle to take pictures in increasingly precarious environments.Defenders of selfie taking believe that there is nothing wrong with trying to preserve memories of a moment in their lives, as physical memories of experiences are important for a lot of people. But at the same time, is it possible that over–documenting your life could be depriving you of actual opportunities to experience what is going on around you?
